What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is when a tooth-colored resin material is applied and hardened with a special light, “bonding” the material to your tooth to help restore your smile. Dental bonding is perfect for:

  • Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
  • Filling a cavity
  • Closing spaces between teeth
  • making your teeth look longer
  • Protecting a tooth’s root exposed by receding gums

How do I know if I need dental bonding?

Dental bonding is usually used for small dental cosmetic projects. Dr. Joseph Tagliarini, our experienced dentist, can help you determine if dental bonding is right for you.

What are the pros and cons of dental bonding?

Pros:

Dental bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedures. Unlike veneers and crowns that require multiple trips to our New Haven office, cosmetic bonding can usually be done in one appointment! It usually only takes about 30-60 minutes for the whole process, and you walk out of our office with a fantastic smile.

Dental bonding also requires the least amount of tooth enamel to be removed, especially when compared to the procedure for dental veneers, and a local anesthesia is usually not required.

Cons:

The material used in a dental bonding is somewhat stain resistant, but not as stain resistant as crowns. Tooth bonding also does not usually last as long as other procedures, such as crowns, veneers, or fillings (although with proper oral care and hygiene, it can last for years). And tooth bonding materials can chip and break off the tooth, which is something to consider if you are a habitual nail or pen biter.
