Resin Composite Dental Fillings
What is a resin composite filling?
Resin composite fillings are made of a combination of ceramic and plastic compounds. Because the resin mimics the appearance of natural teeth so well, resin composite fillings have always been a great option for front teeth. However, for many years, resin fillings were not strong to be used in back teeth, but technological advancements over the last ten years have improved resin fillings so much that they are now capable of standing up to the high-pressure grinding of back teeth use.

When do you need a composite filling?
Composite fillings, from resin or other materials, are used to fill cavities. In order to preserve the rest of your tooth, Dr. Dr. Joseph Tagliarini will remove the decayed portion (the dreaded cavity) and then fill it in with the composite filling.
Resin composite fillings are also used as an alternative to dental bonding to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from things like nail-biting or tooth grinding. Again, since resin composite fillings look so much like “real” teeth, they are the perfect solution for repairing front teeth (or any tooth that shows when you smile.)
Things to consider before getting a resin composite filling:
Resin composite are not the only type of filling you can choose, but they do have certain advantages over other materials. In addition to looking like a “real” tooth, resin fillings chemically bond to tooth structure for further support.
Another thing to consider is that less tooth structure (including the healthy tooth around your cavity) needs to be removed for a resin composite filling compared with silver amalgam fillings.
