Oral Health Care Facts: Children’s Tooth Brushing

The first step in caring for your child’s oral health should be brushing her teeth at least twice a day.The more your child’s brushing improves, cleaner and better-protected her smile will be.

– For small infants, try use a dab of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. A pea-sized drop will work for older children.
– Don’t share toothbrushes. Sharing can pass bacteria from your mouth to your child who will be at a greater risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
– Your child needs a healthy, balanced diet since some healthy foods can help benefit a child’s teeth and keep their tooth enamel strong and free of cavities.
– For an examination and cleaning, bring your child in to see a pediatrician at some point in time before her very first birthday and after her first tooth comes in.
